If you are a Company with multiple locations, within your country or internationally, you must be sharing data, drawings and files across your offices. You must be using a virtual vault or a client server arrangement to store and manage the data. Individuals may also be storing data on their machines and sharing them with specific members of his team or project.
Multi-location companies tend to have huge database with files saved randomly in various directories. These files may also have been saved in different versions of software. There may be the same file lying in multiple locations or multiple versions of the file lying in various directories.
Over a period of time engineers tend to use these files less and less. Re-use of these files come down drastically as engineers find it difficult to access, read, understand and re-use these files. They re-generate the same data all over again for their present use. This re-work leads to inefficiencies, loss of time and lower margins.
Companies tend to also not look at this issue as the sheer work that is required to -de-duplicate, fix, migrate and upload the data is daunting.
